Summary:

Anaconda is building a brand-new collaborative, agentic, and multi-tasking notebook platform, and we’re looking for a backend software engineer to be one of the anchors of this project.

Runt is an open source project located at https://github.com/runtimed/runt where collaboration and multi-editing is built in from the ground up using an event-sourced architecture. We imagine a world where teams collaborate on the same notebook, in conjunction with concurrent & branching AI agents to solve problems together.

You can be one of the key innovators of this space, focusing on the document model. You’ll get to create a backend to store documents, define how the event sourcing will maintain and update documents, along with other capabilities, such as access control, searching and more.

The document store will be consumed by several runt agents, combining this event system with IPython kernels. Strong candidates will be also able to explore uncharted waters around syncing state with multiple kernels, evolving the runtime agent to enable this support.

Anaconda is looking for folks with a product and customer obsessed background, biasing towards execution and with an intuition about solving customer problems with novel solutions. You should be adaptable to following the solution to whichever codebase needs touching. Since this space is novel, you should be excited to try unknown things, unblock yourself, and help the team and product grow along the way.

What You Need:

• 5+ years building backend systems with experience leading technical decisions on distributed systems, real-time data, or collaborative platforms
• Strong foundation in event-driven architectures - whether that's event sourcing, message queues, or real-time sync systems
• Comfortable working across the stack when needed, from database design to API protocols to understanding client needs
• Proficient in Python and TypeScript - you’ll need both to interact with the store and its clients
• Product-focused background - you've built features by understanding user workflows, not just implementing specs
• Collaborative outlook that uplifts the team and fosters cohesion with positive energy
• Exploring the runt codebase and having thoughts/code on where collaborative notebooks should go next
• Deep notebook experience - A data science background, or other experience with the ecosystem of python tools for data exploration and visualization
• Previous early-stage startup experience where you’ve worn multiple hats and innovated quickly

Within the range, individual compensation is determined by various factors, including work location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter will provide more specific details on the salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

The base salary range for this role is $175,500- $227,500 for candidates in New York City and San Francisco, and $131,500 - $193,500 for other US-based team members, along with annual bonus potential, equity participation, and benefits.
