  • You are a certified or retired teacher (non-negotiable) - TOEFL and substitute certification does not meet this requirement
  • You are available to work during the day 3-4 days per week, Monday - Thursday.
  • You are authorized to work in the United States with a degree in education or teaching and have K-6 classroom teaching experience
  • You are a knowledgeable literacy educator, with a background in the Science of Reading including phonics, structured literacy instruction, and how to support students in building reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
  • You are obsessed with student learning! We use a data-driven instructional model to help students make huge gains in literacy in a relatively short period of time. Achieving this requires tutors who believe that every student can learn to read well with great literacy instruction.
  • You have reliable technology and a quiet workspace. OpenLiteracy tutoring lessons take place online. Tutors must have access to reliable, high-speed Internet, a quiet, distraction-free environment to conduct lessons, and a reliable laptop/desktop with camera and microphone functionality.
  • You are organized and a great time manager. You show up on time, manage a calendar with ease, and are able to manage tutoring sessions to start and end at their scheduled times.
  • You have a reliable, consistent schedule. Having students meet with the same tutor is an important aspect of our model, and students’ sessions are not cancelled when you are unavailable; if you routinely require a substitute tutor, we will reassign the student to someone with a more reliable schedule.
  • You are skillful at building relationships. Struggling readers have often experienced a lot of failure in reading. You believe that all students, with great instruction, can make progress in reading and that a caring, supportive tutor can transform literacy outcomes.
