This position is a part-time grant funded position and would require a flexible working schedule to include Saturdays as scheduled. The position is up to twenty-nine hours a week for the summer with the possibility of continuation during the academic year (September 1, 2025 -May 30, 2026). This position may require attendance on overnight trips with the students. Pay will be $16 per hour.RCC Upward Bound (UB) is a free college preparatory program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide academic and non-cognitive support to low-income, first-generation high school students.This position enhances the academic and emotional skills of the Upward Bound participants through academic coursework and other social, cultural, and recreational enrichment activities. The primary objective of this position is to ensure the well-being of program members in grades entering 9th-12th grade with regard to health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships and academics during the six weeks summer program. The individual develops positive and supportive relationships with Upward Bound participants, mentor them, assist with planning, leading, implementing, and participating in free-time, elective workshops, and structured activities for the students. The individual must provide assistance in the supervision of participants at recreation, co-curricular activities, and preparation of meals.This position also provides tutoring to individuals and small groups both virtually and in person. The incumbent assists students in improving academic achievement, supports students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provides useful study skills to students that need supplemental help. Additionally, peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge in the subjects of English, math, science, history, foreign language, technology, or an appropriate academic field.This individual serves as a model for students in the techniques, strategies, attitudes, and beliefs that successful learners employ as they acquire new knowledge, solve problems, and complete academic tasks. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing text, reviewing test questions, generating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems and helping to monitor the students' progress and attend workshops and field trips and outings with Upward Bound students.Lastly, this position provides assistance in handling and/or refer student disciplinary issues, crisis, and personal issues to appropriate Upward Bound staff. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with low-income and first-generation students from diverse backgrounds and those who have experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting student participants.Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Must have knowledge, skills and experience to tutor in math, science, English, foreign language, or science and track academic progress.
- Excellent organizational, verbal, and communication skills.
- Position requires a positive attitude and the ability to work effectively with and display sensitivity toward a wide range of ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural and life-style differences among staff and student participants.
- Personal interaction, the ability to be a team player, and leadership skills are essential.
