For more information, please contact Davina Spillmann at or Tim Viands at .To apply:Director of Learning Support – Full TimeStuart Hall School – Staunton, VAStuart Hall School, an independent Episcopal day and boarding school serving grades 6-12, seeks a full-time Director of Learning Support to oversee the school’s tiered Learning Support Program, focusing on students with academic learning needs. They ensure appropriate accommodations, provide interventions for skill gaps, and help students develop strategies for success. Collaborating with academic and student life administrators, they manage resources, develop support structures, and facilitate communication with faculty, staff, families, and outside professionals.Position HighlightsThe Director of Learning Support’s responsibilities include:Learning Support Program Administration
  • Manage caseload of students across Learning Support tiers, including accommodations, Learning Lab curriculum, and individualized learning plans.
  • Support teachers in implementing individualized plans tailored to student needs.
  • Supervise Teaching Assistants in Learning Lab courses.
  • Facilitate accommodations process with families, ensuring clear communication and support.
  • Assess student progress using formative and summative practices, adjusting instruction as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Studies and Dean of Faculty to recommend additional student support (e.g., tutors, psychoeducational evaluations).
  • Coordinate testing accommodations with the Testing Coordinator.
  • Conduct classroom observations to align learning support with instructional practices.
  • Attend Student Support Team meetings and maintain confidentiality.
Support of Mastery Learning
  • Understand and apply Mastery Learning principles, department standards, and schoolwide policies.
  • Lead faculty professional development on instructional best practices.
  • Support the Peer Tutoring Program in collaboration with the Director of Studies.
  • Co-teach 8th Grade Summit and/or Freshman Seminar on executive functioning, study skills, and academic habits.
Additional Responsibilities include:
  • Support Enrollment Management by assisting with marketing and recruitment for the Learning Support Program, including engaging with prospective families and educational consultants.
  • Review applications for students with identified learning needs in collaboration with the Dean of Enrollment Management.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to support students outside the school day.
  • Participate in co-curricular programs and general school operations.
  • Engage in residential life, either as an on-campus resident with weekly and weekend duties or as part of the Weekend Duty Team, chaperoning student activities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum four years of teaching students with learning differences.
  • Strong understanding of child development, psychology, academic skill progression, and the impact of disabilities on learning.
  • Ability to assess student progress and tailor instruction to address learning gaps and executive functioning skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications (absences will not harm application)
  • Master’s or terminal degree in Education, Special Education, Education Administration, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Additional coursework or professional development in Curriculum and Instruction, Pedagogy, or Child Development.
  • Experience teaching high school students with diagnosed learning differences.
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and leading a program or initiative (not necessarily learning support-related).
