Contract Tax CPA or CPA/JD

Profit Matters | Remote / Flexible | Contract Hourly Profit Matters is looking for an experienced Tax CPA or CPA/JD to support our team on a contract, hourly basis. This is not a basic tax prep role. We need someone who can review complex returns, help us think through higher-level tax and accounting issues, and provide clear technical guidance when matters require deeper expertise. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys challenging tax work, has strong judgment, and wants flexible project-based or hourly work without the commitment of a full-time position. What You’ll Do Review complex business and individual tax returns before filing, including:

• S Corporations
• Partnerships
• Multi-entity structures
• High-income individual returns
• Business owner returns
• Complex basis, equity, and ownership issues
• Entity conversions and restructures
• Book-to-tax adjustments
• Tax planning scenarios

Provide technical guidance on complex tax and accounting matters, such as:

• S corp reasonable compensation and shareholder basis
• Partnership allocations and capital accounts
• Entity restructuring and conversions
• Asset sales, equity sales, and acquisition-related tax issues
• Fixed asset, depreciation, and cost segregation questions
• Complex bookkeeping/accounting cleanup tied to tax return completion
• Journal entry review and tax treatment analysis
• Client-specific tax research and memo-style explanations when needed

Support our internal team by reviewing:

• Workpapers
• Journal entries
• Tax positions
• Client facts to help us confidently finalize returns and advisory recommendations

What We’re Looking For

• CPA required
• CPA/JD strongly preferred but not required
• Strong experience with business tax returns
• Deep understanding of S corps, partnerships, and owner-operated businesses
• Ability to review complex work and identify issues without overcomplicating the process
• Comfortable explaining technical topics clearly to both internal team members and clients
• Strong judgment, responsiveness, and attention to detail
• Experience with UltraTax, QuickBooks Online, and/or tax research tools is a plus

• You might be retired, semi-retired, running your own small practice, working independently, or simply looking for high-level contract work.
• You are the person other accountants call when something gets weird, technical, or messy.
• You do not need to manage clients day-to-day, sell work, or sit in meetings all week.
• We need a sharp technical reviewer and advisor who can jump in when the work requires deeper expertise.
