About the position The Catherine Cutler Institute at the University of Southern Maine, in partnership with the Maine CDC, is seeking a Research Associate II: Epidemiologist. The Research Associate II (RAII) [https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MoR3M3S1rcrhtfb1KroiCQ0F-PjS9nOY/view?usp=sharing] carries out a full range of complex epidemiologic and surveillance activities, with a focus on Chronic Disease, Maternal and Child Health, and/or Injury. The RAII works with the University of Southern Maine (USM) Disease Prevention Epidemiology (DP Epi) team, a team of epidemiologists dedicated to building epidemiology capacity at USM and the Maine CDC (the state’s health department). The RAII provides epidemiology and subject matter expertise to state, federal, and local partners. The RAII is responsible for creating, implementing, and sustaining systems for public health surveillance for the Maine CDC. This includes championing work on measuring health disparities and social determinants of health, as well as assessing the burden and trends of health-related outcomes, including morbidity, mortality, natality, exposures, and risk factors in the general population and among sub-populations. The RA II will lead and collaborate on epidemiologic studies in program-specific areas with Maine CDC programs and other local, state, and federal partners. The RA II will train other staff members to improve data visualization and other analytic skills such as data management, complex sample survey data analysis, and documentation. This is a grant funded position with a starting annual salary up to $73,312. This is a hybrid remote position, with in-office days at the Maine CDC building in Augusta.

Responsibilities

  • Creating, implementing, and sustaining systems for public health surveillance for the Maine CDC.
  • Championing work on measuring health disparities and social determinants of health.
  • Assessing the burden and trends of health-related outcomes, including morbidity, mortality, natality, exposures, and risk factors in the general population and among sub-populations.
  • Lead and collaborate on epidemiologic studies in program-specific areas with Maine CDC programs and other local, state, and federal partners.
  • Train other staff members to improve data visualization and other analytic skills such as data management, complex sample survey data analysis, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Epidemiology or related field, preferably from an accredited school of public health, and a minimum of 6 years related work experience.
  • Demonstrated mastery of advanced principles of epidemiology and public health.
  • Experience developing and implementing public health surveillance systems.
  • Experience working with the major public health surveillance systems related to chronic disease, maternal and child health, and injury.
  • Expertise conducting analysis of complex sample survey datasets, preferably with SAS or R.
  • Experience building partnerships and successfully collaborating with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to identify the need for applied epidemiologic studies and the types of studies best suited for the situation.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, including knowledge of programming in major computer-based statistical packages, preferably SAS or R.
