This position reports to the Administrative Director and is technically supervised by the Chair of Anatomic Pathology. Responsibilities include the administrative and technical day-to-day operations of the Histology Laboratory, including the grossing area.
This position interacts with Medical Center clinical and executive staff and faculty, University faculty and staff, external regulatory agencies, other health care institutions and vendors and may represent the Department of Laboratories at professional association conferences.
Duties of an Associate Technical Director of Surgical Pathology may include but are not limited to the following:
- Will be responsible for personnel recruitments, discipline, evaluations and scheduling to ensure the highest standards of technical excellence and necessary coverage for the delivery of patient care services while complying with University Hospital Policies and Procedures. Responsible for supervision of staff on a day-to-day basis, work-flow and problem resolution. Develops and implements competency program for all staff as mandated by regulatory agencies. Responsible for the development and maintenance of policy and procedure manuals based on regulatory agency standards and University Hospital policies and procedures.
- Maintains the laboratory?s accreditation by compliance with all established standards, i.e., NYS DOH, CLEP, CAP, JCAHO, etc.
- Develops, implements and monitors personnel, supply and expense and capital equipment budgets. Responsible for ordering equipment and supplies to ensure satisfactory levels are maintained
- In conjunction with the Pathology Vice Chair and Director of Anatomic Pathology where appropriate, responsible for evaluating and implementing new methodologies, programs, supplies and equipment which may result in improved quality, enhanced revenue generation and/or cost savings. Plans, coordinates and implements reorganization or expansion of laboratory facilities to meet the needs of changing or emerging clinical services. Participates in supervisory projects that enhance the operation of the laboratories as assigned.
- Works with AP LIS Coordinator to ensure LIS program success and is responsible for LIS training of staff to ensure efficient workflow.
- Works with Director of Anatomic Pathology on AP QA program as assigned.
- Responsible for teaching and training staff, students and residents in methodologies. Develops and participates in continuing education and in-service education programs.
- Adherence to Corporate Compliance Plan and participation in Laboratory Compliance Plan and identifies compliance issues as per Corporate Compliance Plan procedures.
- Identifies facilities deficiency and moves forward those not resolved in a timely manner by Facilities and housekeeping.
- Responsible for safety program, working with the Laboratory Quality Systems Manager and the Director of Anatomic Pathology.
- Benchmarking efforts in Surgical Pathology laboratories:
- BS Degree in Medical Technology or one of the biological sciences is required. In lieu of a BS degree in Medical Technology or a biological science, an additional 8 years of experience is required.
- NY State Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Histology Technician license is required.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in a clinical laboratory which must be in the specialty area of Histology.
- Experience with a Laboratory Information System required.
- Experience in Quality Assurance required.
- Experience with laboratory bar coding and tracking programs required.
- Masters Degree.
- Experience in a teaching hospital laboratory preferred.
- 2 years supervisory experience in the specialty area of Histology.
