The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic-year position as an Assistant Professor of Costume Design. The successful candidate will teach courses in costume design, make-up, costume history, and costume crafts and be responsible for the costume design for all Theatre & Dance Department mainstage productions and the Theatre for Young Audiences tour. This candidate will supervise two full-time costume technicians and mentor student designers. Specific assignments will depend on department needs and the candidate's expertise. Additional responsibilities may include: teaching online courses and advising students about their academic progress, internships and careers in costume design and technical theater. This faculty member will teach undergraduate students, be active in scholarly and applied research, and engage in service activities.
The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively and cooperatively with faculty and staff in the department, college, and university. Qualifications:
Required Education:
An MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in costume design or closely related terminal degree from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
Applicants nearing completion of the terminal degree may be considered. For an appointment, the degree must be completed by the date of appointment (August 1, 2024).
Required Experience:
1. Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and
socioeconomic backgrounds
2. 2 years experience teaching at the undergraduate college level or equivalent professional experience.
3. Demonstrated excellence in the field of costume design, and willingness to make contributions to strengthening our current
theatre design and technology curriculum, participating in recruitment, retention, and graduation strategies; and mentoring
students in deep and meaningful ways.
Preferred Experience: * An active career engaged as a theatre practitioner and/or scholar as evidenced by CV.
2. Experience designing costumes for dance performance.
3. The ability to communicate design through both hand-rendering and digital tools (eg., Procreate and Photoshop).
4. A record of innovative approaches to theatre education as evidenced by syllabus, teaching philosophy or teaching demonstration sample.
5. Expertise in assessing student learning capabilities and learning styles and understanding how to develop curriculum for assigned courses.
