The University Center invites applications for two (2) Facilities Associate positions for two (2) overnight third shifts.
Performs work of lower-level position and, under general supervision, provides direct customer service to members of the campus and to the community at large. Builds and maintains a work atmosphere of trust and respect by establishing open communication among team members; recognizing the value of individual differences at all levels of the organization; taking steps to prevent destructive conflict and handling conflict in an appropriate manner; listening and responding appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of all individuals; and providing support and assistance to team members. Performs intermediate to advanced custodial duties, including specialty cleaning as it pertains to the work unit or area and seasonal cleaning work. Learns and understands the unique aspects and have mastered the specific custodial needs of the work area. Requests supplies and/or stock supplies from basement supply cage. Informs supervisor of observed problems and handles the more routine. Reports or requests repairs to supervisor. Reports equipment maintenance needs.
1st Opening: performs duties overnight 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Friday thru Monday, days off are Tuesday and Wednesday.
2nd Opening: performs duties overnight 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Sunday thru Thursday, days off are Friday and Saturday.
Responsibilities
Position is a member of a custodial team working a nighttime ?third shift? including weekends and holidays. The position will have a set weekly schedule, however, working as a team member will be expected to provide continuity of custodial services during personnel absences and holidays.
- Provides custodial routine services including but not limited to; sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, polishing; vacuuming, spot cleaning; cleaning walls, ceilings, light fixtures, vents, interior and exterior glass windows and doors; changing light bulbs; collects, sorts, and removes trash, garbage, and recyclable materials
- Uses a knowledge of various appropriate cleaning methods, knowledge of general and specialty cleaning chemicals, and the appropriate use of potentially hazardous materials to ensure that lavatories and restrooms are clean and sanitary
- Cleans building furnishings within assigned area by dusting, washing, and/or polishing office furniture and equipment
- Cleans offices and office suites; and common areas and meeting rooms; within assigned area by dusting and cleaning furniture, vacuuming carpeted floors, mopping hard surface floors and collecting and removing all trash and waste products
- Cleans kitchens within assigned area by mopping hard surface floors, appropriate use of potentially hazardous materials to ensure kitchens are clean and disinfected, applying appropriate cleaning, disinfectant, and degreasing chemicals to surfaces and walls, refill soap dispensers and paper products, remove all trash and waste product
- Cleans interior walls by removing adhesive tape, thumb tacks, paper pins, staples, and similar items, and washing and scrubbing (if necessary) the walls with prescribed wall cleaners to remove stains and graffiti
- Uses cleaning chemicals properly and safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, masks, and/or rubber gloves and boots as necessary, following either written or verbal directions for mixing chemical compounds according to specifications, applying the cleaning chemicals properly on surfaces or items designated for their use, and disposing of residual chemical products as directed or storing and labeling them for future use
- Assists in preventing accidents resulting from snow- or ice-covered walkways by shoveling or sweeping snow or ice from sidewalks and entrances and spreading salt, sand or chemicals within the assigned areas
- Performs a measure of building and facility security by being the staff on duty during evenings and after-hour building closure. Un-locking and locking designated work areas, and notifying proper authorities when security of the building is in jeopardy
- Reports damage to buildings, facilities, furnishings, and equipment, as well as emergency conditions beyond the capability to handle by contacting either the immediate supervisor or UM Police
- Performs minor equipment repair and maintenance including but not limited to belt replacement, pad replacement, mop/squeegee heads
- May clean outdoor entryways, loading docks or areas around dumpsters requiring both hand tools including shovels or rakes as well as power equipment such as scrubbers, blowers, sweepers or pressure washers
- Contributes to the overall success of the night crew team and the University Center by completing special projects and performing all duties as assigned

- Lifting: Floor to knuckle height, 75lbs. 12 inches to 40 inches, 75lbs. Floor to 60 inches, 50lbs. Floor to 48 inches, 60lbs. Floor to overhead, 5lbs sustained, with both hands.
- Carrying: 2 handed front carry 75lbs for 10 feet.
- Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of cleaning equipment 25lbs, handling janitor?s cart 5lbs).
- Pushing and pulling forces required (handling, pushing and pulling classroom and office furniture, file cabinets, and equipment): up to 60lbs sustained at waist level.
- Pulling force required for handling Kaivac machine: 75lbs force.
- Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
- Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead with 5lbs in both hands, sustained.
- Working overhead from various positions (standing, squatting, and kneeling).
- Balancing when climbing and working on a 6, 10, or 12-foot ladders.
- Use of various hand grip circumferences and firm hand grip positions while manipulating various tools and equipment (maximum 50lbs).
- High School diploma or equivalent and twelve (12) months experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possesses more than twelve (12) months directly related cleaning experience, or a combination of experience and education
- Some university experience
- Ability to perform seasonal/cyclical cleaning work
