The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a skilled and motivated person to perform all journey level mechanic duties including inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting overhauling, and repairing vehicular equipment, heavy equipment and all gasoline, diesel, hydraulic or cable operate equipment repaired in the shop.
Principal Duties
As a Journey Diesel Mechanic, you will:
- Perform all journey level mechanic duties including inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting overhauling, and repairing vehicular equipment, heavy equipment and all gasoline, diesel, hydraulic or cable operate equipment repaired in the shop.
- Inspect all parts for wear, breaks, or defects; use diagnostic testing and calibrating equipment to repair or adjust specialized parts such as carburetors, transmissions, electrical and other parts.
- Perform cutting, welding and brazing as needed; may do minor body work.
- Inspect repaired equipment to insure proper repair of problem has been accomplished.
- Operate tools necessary to perform the duties including pneumatic tools, power tools, hand tools and test equipment.
- Perform necessary paper work to properly account for parts and labor used on each job.
- Select and order repair parts.
- Complete paper work (time cards, work orders, etc.).
- Clean up after repairs are completed.
- Maintain equipment records, read and interpret parts and repair manuals.
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days.
- A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
- At least 4 years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
- 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
- Your own full set of mechanics tool (tool allowance provided).
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and fellow workers.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment, mechanical operation, electrical systems, hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of methods of repairing cars, trucks and other automotive equipment; proper repair, maintenance, servicing and record-keeping of automotive equipment
- Knowledge of mechanical tools and modern diagnostic testing equipment
- Methods used in a program of preventative maintenance to heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment repair equipment.
- Skilled in hydraulic system diagnosis and repair
- Ability to assist other journey and apprentice positions with difficult repair problems
- Ability to pass certification tests and perform safety inspections when required
- Experience with air brake systems, hydraulics, truck and HD equipment electrical systems, truck and HD engines and drive trains, and truck suspension
- Principles, theories and practices of automotive repair and/or collision repair techniques
- Maintain inventory; track receipt, sending and delivery of materials
- Use and maintain a variety of hand tools
- Skills in using parts manuals
- This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
- Physical Requirements: Strenuous - The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
- Working Conditions: Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or chemicals, etc.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
