The National Zoning Atlas, online at , is a project of the Legal Constructs Lab at the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning to create a national database documenting the zoning codes of every jurisdiction across the country. This project aims to depict key aspects of zoning codes in an online, user-friendly map and provide a consistent platform for research teams to add and update information on each zoning district as data is collected. Most zoning code analysis is being conducted by decentralized project teams, but it needs to be reviewed and verified before inclusion into the National Zoning Atlas. Additional zoning code analysis is being conducted by the National Zoning Atlas team.
Position Description
The Legal Constructs Lab invites applications for a zoning code analyst position beginning as soon as September 25, 2023, or as soon as the position is filled. The successful candidate will assist with the creation of the National Zoning Atlas, working under the supervision of the Project Coordinator (Zoning Code), and will be responsible for:
- Contributing to the completion of the National Zoning Atlas by reading and analyzing zoning codes, and inputting collected analysis into a standardized database
- Coordinating data collection with external research teams contributing zoning code analysis information
- Coordinating data collection with, and communicating results to, the external research team developing machine learning processes to simulate human analysis
- Assisting with the execution of research projects and reports using collected data
- Documenting and analyzing data findings
- Collaborating with principal investigator, project coordinators, and other staff of the Legal Constructs Lab in development of project reports and publications
- Participating in the development of coding schemes to perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis
- Conducting accuracy checks on collected data
- Facilitating efficient management of data and record-keeping systems for collected information

- Experience reading, reviewing, researching, or administering U.S. zoning codes.
- Experience working with diverse data types and data validation.
- Familiarity with zoning code and legal research.
