TEAM: Khan Academy REPORTS TO: Regina Ross, Chief People Officer (CPO) ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization on a mission to provide a free, world-class education to anyone, anywhere. We already reach millions of students every month and are growing rapidly. Right now, we’re hard at work helping learners address any unfinished learning that the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused. We also know that not all communities have been impacted equally by this pandemic, which makes our work focusing on providing equitable solutions to historically under-resourced communities even more important. WE ARE DRIVEN BY OUR COMMUNITY Our students, teachers, and parents come from all walks of life and so do we. We are fun, diverse, quirky people that come from a variety of backgrounds. Our team includes people from academia and from high tech companies and tiny startups. We hire great people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. Valuing diversity, equity and inclusion is necessary for us to actualize our mission and truly impact the communities we serve. We believe that the best way to provide impactful education is to create a diverse team of people from different backgrounds, races, religions, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and experiences. We’re a hardworking team that’s passionate about helping learners and teachers around the globe! We strive to be world class in investing in our people and commit to developing you as a professional. THE ROLE The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) is a newly created leadership role that will report to the Chief People Officer. As Director of DEIB, you will lead Khan Academy’s efforts to develop a DEI strategy that reflects our focus on helping historically under-resourced (HUR) learners feel seen & heard through culturally relevant curriculum & pedagogy. You will help design our workplace to reflect the diversity of the lived experiences and perspectives of the teachers, students, parents, and administrators that our products intend to serve. Your will:

  • Leverage the foundational work started by external DEI Consultant Dr. Derrick Gay and collaborate with our newly formed DEIB Working Group to design a DEIB strategic plan that explicitly articulates organizationally meaningful objectives, tactics, timelines, resources, accountability and evidence of effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team and staff to facilitate trust-building, relationship-building, cultural competency, courageous conversations, and organizational awareness as it relates to DEIB.
  • Create dynamic programs for all employees across all levels (including new hires) to build individual capacity to intentionally drive DEIB.
  • Partner with the Talent Acquisition team on Inclusive Hiring Audits to identify strengths and growth areas around recruiting, sourcing, evaluating, and hiring a diverse workforce with a particular focus on the underrepresented groups of Black & Latino employees and women in technology.
  • Work effectively with leaders and cross functional teams to drive development and implementation of training and education programs to cultivate awareness, and engagement that will foster a diverse, inclusive, and positive work environment.
  • Provide DEIB subject matter expertise and strategic guidance by sharing perspectives, insights, emergent issues, industry best practices and knowledge in a consultative manner to stakeholders across the organization to enhance DEIB goals and cultural competency.
  • Oversee our affinity groups, ensuring common mission, norms, and selection criteria, while aligning goals to the overarching DEIB and organizational strategy.
  • Research and establish DEIB metrics and goals that align to business objectives and support our strategic DEIB vision.
  • Liaise with the leadership team and DEIB working group to continue building a culture that is aligned with our core values.
  • Regularly monitor and communicate progress toward our DEIB strategic vision and goals as well as the execution of strategies that map to those objectives. WHAT YOU BRING
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience with a record of successfully implementing and sustaining effective internal DEI programs
  • Deep content knowledge of the research base and best practices for workplace DEI
  • Strong background leading change and stakeholder relationship management
  • Strategic thinking skills with the ability to translate strategy into executable action
  • In-depth training in diversity, inclusion and multicultural practices from reputable organizations
  • Demonstrated track record in challenging and influencing peers to approach all work with an equity lens and facilitating difficult conversations
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, conducting focus group sessions and presenting to executives
  • Experience designing / creating and teaching
