What We Look For In a Elementary School Reading Tutor
- Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of phonemic awareness, phonics application, fluency development, vocabulary building, reading comprehension strategies, text structure identification, and literary element recognition for developing readers. Guides students through sounding out unfamiliar words, identifying main ideas and supporting details, making predictions and inferences, retelling stories, and connecting texts to personal experiences. Emphasizes building reading confidence and love of books while connecting reading skills to writing, science, and social studies content.
- Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with elementary reading standards and science of reading principles, and common challenges such as decoding multisyllabic words, comprehending informational text, and maintaining reading stamina. Adapts instruction using leveled readers, graphic organizers, and interactive read-alouds to support developing readers from kindergarten through fifth grade at various reading levels including struggling and advanced readers.
- Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
- Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
