Manager, Data Science - Innovation, Governance & Enablement

Position Summary Details We are seeking a seasoned AI leader to drive the next evolution of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare. This role is ideal for a strategic and technically grounded manager who brings deep experience in both traditional machine learning and Generative AI (GenAI), including Agentic AI systems. You will lead a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering responsible innovation, embedding AI and data governance, driving Ethical AI Leadership, supporting production AI systems, and elevating AI literacy across the organization. This position plays a critical role in translating cutting-edge AI capabilities into scalable, compliant, and impactful solutions across clinical, operational, and member-facing domains. Essential Duties & Responsibilities The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • AI Strategy & Innovation
  • Lead the roadmap and execution of innovation initiatives spanning traditional ML, GenAI, and Agentic AI.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Business stakeholders to identify, prototype, and scale high-impact AI use cases.
  • Stay ahead of the curve on emerging AI paradigms, particularly in the healthcare and life sciences sectors.
  • AI & Data Governance
  • Develop and operationalize frameworks for ethical, transparent, and compliant AI—aligned with enterprise data governance and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FDA, CMS).
  • Develop AI Governance frameworks to establish Ethical AI Leadership using NIST RM Framework, OneTrust, HITrust etc
  • Ensure model lifecycle management (development, validation, monitoring, and deprecation) adheres to internal risk and compliance protocols.
  • Collaborate with legal, compliance, and security teams on AI risk mitigation strategies.
  • AI Platform & Production Support
  • Oversee deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of AI solutions in production, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Work with MLOps, Cloud Engineering, and Infrastructure teams to implement robust pipelines and observability for both traditional and GenAI models.
  • Troubleshoot complex system behaviors and guide the incident response for AI/ML services.
  • AI Literacy & Culture Enablement
  • Champion AI literacy across technical and non-technical stakeholders through training, workshops, and strategic communications.
  • Enable responsible experimentation with sandbox environments, reusable assets, and self-service GenAI platforms.
  • Mentor and coach junior AI talent and promote a collaborative, learning-oriented team culture.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience in AI/ML, including at least 3 years in people, product or program management roles.
  • Proven expertise in both traditional ML (e.g., predictive modeling, NLP, computer vision) and GenAI (LLMs, prompt engineering, multi-agent systems).
  • Strong understanding of AI governance principles, model risk management, and regulatory landscapes in healthcare.
  • Experience managing production AI systems at scale, including monitoring and support strategies.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence across levels and domains.

Other:

  • Prior experience in healthcare, health tech, payer, or provider organizations.
  • Familiarity with leading GenAI platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source LLMs), agent frameworks (LangChain, AutoGen, etc.), and orchestration tools.
  • Experience building and managing cross-functional or matrixed teams.
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Computer Science, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or related field.

Supervisory Responsibilities You will lead a multidisciplinary team focused on delivering responsible innovation, embedding AI and data governance, driving Ethical AI Leadership, supporting production AI systems, and elevating AI literacy across the organization. Working Environment and Travel Requirements Work is typically in a normal office administrative environment involving minimal exposure to physical risks. Position requires little to moderate physical activity. Mostly sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. No significant stooping is usually required.
