Job Description

Tax staff, part time, permanent, remote Thomas H. Franklin & Associates LLC seeks a candidate who works smarter, not harder. Work is 24 hr/wk with no mandatory overtime other than potential for 50 hrs/week between 03/23 and 04/11 and some weekend work on 04/12 and working 04/13 through 04/15. These extra hours are to assist workloads for someone on maternity leave. Pickiness - we strive for an environment where we work with pleasant people, both customers and teammates. That means we need to extend the same courtesy to you! What we offer

  • Hourly pay varies between $35 to $65/hour depending upon experience and technology adaptation.
  • Flexibility as to your established work hours; however, these hours will need to be established between Monday through Friday and generally have overlap with 8-5PM CST. Exceptions may apply at certain times.
  • Remote work equipment will be provided.
  • Monthly internet and cell phone reimbursement.
  • Reimbursements of PTIN and other professional credentials while employed.
  • Continuing professional education/ training offered.
  • Collaboration: the supervisors are teachers by nature with many years of experience to share. However, we are willing to learn too!
  • We offer a Simple retirement plan with 3% matching once the participation requirements are met. No, we do not currently offer health insurance.
  • We utilize pre-population software and AI research capabilities, so the work becomes less data input grunge work and more higher-level outcomes and analysis.

The Candidate Needs To Possess The Following Skill Set

  • Have experience working with income tax return programs, particularly individual income taxes. Working with UltraTax, Workpaper CS, Practice CS and Tax Dome are a plus but not necessary if tech savvy.
  • Communicate with email, on the phone and video conferences. Our firm preference is emails with clients (and our portals for confidential items) because emails provide easy follow-up and documentation of conversations! However, more complex conversations require phone or video. Learning the difference is key!
  • Possess analytical skills. Be able to compare an end result with an expected result. Try to answer the why the discrepancy.
  • Have a good working knowledge of Excel and ability to learn new formulas and fix spreadsheet issues. Googling Excel ideas is fine too!
  • Hold an ability to form a “big picture” understanding and apply a commonsense approach.
  • Document decisions and customer communications within workpapers.
  • Manage projects: move forward on other areas when stuck on one matter. Gather all questions at once. Avoid or strive to minimize piecemeal movements of projects. Pivot when needed to a different project,
  • Always be present while at work. Listen, learn, speak up, follow, advise. Do not be afraid. Absorb knowledge like a sponge!
  • Adapt quickly to new technology and procedures. Assistance in developing our processes after we get through the 4/15 deadlines as we transition to a new practice management and portal system. For security of data, ability to avoid clicking on links to phish emails or other security breaches.
  • We are accountants so this should not be a surprise here: maintain confidentiality. Hold to the highest professional standards and quality control. Be detail oriented of course! And there are some monotonous challenges. However, our concern is accurate and professional outcomes and not the “same as last year” so if technology or process can help expedite, we are all ears! Develop buy in before implementing.
  • The job is remote so please have most social needs met outside of work. We try to stay out of your way to do your work other than be supported and provide guidance when needed. We also have Thomson Reuters support helplines for the tax software and research as well as certain prewritten procedures in our database. The owner of the company likes a team environment, but personal needs are important, not some stupid social hour or weekly meetings that waste time away from one’s family, friends and other personal life involvements!
  • Candidate needs to provide references for at least one former supervisor, and 2 others may be former coworkers or customers. We will be checking on them for the final candidate with of course your warning that we will be doing so. Because our business handles confidential customer information, we also need to do a background check before final hiring occurs.
