Job Description

Southwest Airlines is seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our Android Platform team. In this remote role, you will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of the Southwest App for Android, influencing key technical decisions and mentoring other engineers to drive product development. You will be an integral part of our team, ensuring the continued evolution of the app that supports our mission to offer customers a seamless and high-quality experience. This position is remote, but may require occasional travel for team meetings, training, or conferences. The majority of your time will be spent working from home, with occasional visits to company locations as needed.

Responsibilities

Lead the technical direction and feature roadmap for large-scale cloud systems. Serve as a technical lead, guiding both internal and external development teams in product creation. Analyze project feasibility by evaluating requirements, developing solutions, and identifying opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with product managers and clients to define and refine feature requirements. Drive continuous improvement by exploring new technologies and methodologies. Design and implement system solutions, ensuring they meet industry standards and are compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems. Review and test code to ensure quality, structure, and alignment with best practices. Mentor and support other engineers, sharing your expertise and helping them grow professionally. Stay up to date with the latest development tools, programming practices, and technology trends, contributing to educational opportunities and industry discussions. May perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

Strong knowledge of software development methodologies, practices, and technologies, gained through formal education or professional experience. Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, Kotlin) with hands-on experience in Android development. Excellent communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills, with the ability to work effectively across teams and technologies. Ability to clearly articulate ideas, strategies, and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong leadership capabilities, with experience managing multiple assignments and delivering successful results. Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering growth and knowledge transfer. Experience with Android technologies such as Jetpack, Jetpack Compose, and Android Studio is preferred. Familiarity with software architecture patterns like MVP and MVVM is a plus. Must be able to work remotely, manage time efficiently, and use workplace tools effectively. Education Required: High school diploma or GED Required: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Experience Required: Advanced-level expertise in software development and Android technologies. Preferred: Experience with mobile app architecture, development, and deployment. Other Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the U.S. as defined by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to comply with company attendance and performance standards. Ability to work in a home office setting for extended periods. Ability to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken. Must maintain a professional appearance according to company guidelines.
