Join Our Team

We're seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Government Affairs team as a Summer Intern in Washington DC. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a talented team of professionals who are dedicated to advancing the company's policy agendas and supporting its business priorities. As a Summer Intern, you'll have the chance to gain hands-on experience in government affairs, develop your skills, and build a network of contacts in the industry.

About the Role

The Government Affairs office represents American Express on important public policy issues around the world, before Congress and the Administration, and state governments across the country. Our team works closely with business units to advance their policy agendas and support their business priorities. We're passionate about our commitment to drive the Company's goals of growth and progress by monitoring the issues and public policy debates and engaging with government officials at various levels throughout the world to provide our perspective.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support GA activities including research, public policy projects, and communications
  • Research current events and work on various projects as necessary to assist with deadline-driven assignments
  • Assist staff with legislative, regulatory, and consumer group issues, attend legislative hearings, provide hearing coverage with follow-up report writing
  • Conduct research on organizations, issues, trends, case studies, federal legislative and political agendas, public policy issues, and regional events
  • Other responsibilities may include front desk coverage, greet guests, answer phones, respond to customer inquiries, retrieve and open mail, assist with reports, prepare Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents and reports

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently a sophomore or junior enrolled in a full-time 4-year undergraduate degree program in political science, social science, business, communications, economics, or a related study
  • Students must have a graduation date between December 2025 and June 2027
  • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
  • Must be a permanent resident of Washington DC

  • Demonstrated experience building, sustaining, and leveraging relationships
  • Strong work ethic, organizational skills, and attention to detail with excellent follow-up skills

  • Project management skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Political and/or public policy knowledge experience
  • Previous office/corporate experience
  • Microsoft Office suite

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this role is $24.05 to $63.00 hourly, plus a sign-on bonus. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings, and paid time off.
